September 17, 2010 -

Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning is again seeking members for his Youth Advisory Council (AGYAC). This is the ninth annual invitation to high school students, who are interested in learning more about our state government.
AGYAC is composed of high school students, who are selected each year to represent schools and communities from across the state. The opportunity to participate is available to high school juniors and seniors. AGYAC members learn about state government and criminal justice issues at a one-day conference in Lincoln. The daylong event features tours of the Capitol and Penitentiary, and includes discussion forums with some of Nebraska's top elected officials.
AGYAC membership offers an excellent chance for students from District 2 to learn about our government and criminal justice system, fine-tune their leadership skills and enjoy the rewards that are derived from civic involvement. The Attorney General's director of programs reports that ten students from District 2 participated in AGYAC in the past four years.  These students said that AGYAC provided a valuable learning experience.
The opportunity to get involved is also open to parents of the members, as well as to educators. During the conference, lunch will be provided for students. However, a small fee will be charged for parents and educators.
Members of AGYAC can be nominated by educators or their state senator. If you are a high school junior or senior who attends a public or private school in District 2, and would like for me to recommend you for membership on the Attorney General's Youth Advisory Council, please send me your resume and a brief statement that explains why you would be a good candidate to represent District 2 on AGYAC.
Applications for AGYAC membership are due to Attorney General Bruning's office by Friday, October 15, 2010. All of the application forms can be mailed from my legislative office or downloaded from the Attorney General's web site at www.ago.state.ne.us.
We welcome your contacts by mail, phone or email.

Haunted Victorian Ghost Walk

The Plattsmouth Conservancy Inc. is the host of the
2010 Haunted Victorian Ghost Walk.
The event will be held in Plattsmouth on
Friday, October 22, and Saturday, October 23, 2010.

The walk will start at 7:30p.m. each evening and conclude at 10:00 p.m.

Step back in time and visit historical homes and buildings nestled within the haunted hills of Plattsmouth. Follow the night watchman to each location to experience a chilling evening of frightful ghost stories from present day and years gone by.
Guests will travel by foot with lantern carriers to three historic homes and the historic Cass County Court House under the care of the night watchman.  Along the way story tellers will tell true ghost stories from the local Plattsmouth area.
Guests will also have the opportunity to step inside the historic homes and courthouse and listen to Victorian Ghost Stories and Nebraska Ghost stories portrayed by a cast of actors in Victorian period attire.
Following the walking tour all guests are invited to meet at the Historic Plattsmouth Public Library for light refreshments and a viewing of the silent movie "Dracula".
This is not your typical "Haunted House" event.  There will be no skeletons popping out at you or giant spiders dropping down on you.  But.. perhaps you will catch a glimpse of a ghostly spirit who chooses to make their presence known at this time of year when the veil between our world and the spirit world is most easily penetrated.
Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at "Antiques Off Main", 125 South 5th Street, Plattsmouth, Nebraska.  They can also be purchased through the mail by contacting Leigh Jean Koinzan at the contact information above.  Advanced reservations are required.
To view a copy of the event flyer and pictures of the tour locations visit: www.plattsmouthconservancy.org

KIMMEL GALLERY DISPLAYS WORK

of

MURRAY WILDLIFE ARTIST

When you're in Nebraska City for the Applejack Festival this weekend, stop to see
the art exhibit at Kimmel Gallery by one of Murray's residents, retired high school
teacher and wildlife artist, Greg Hartel.

Greg is a Wisconsin native who taught at Bellevue East Hish School for 30 years
before retiring.  While at East High, he taught A.P. Biology, Biology, Environmental
Education, Studio Art and Stage Craft.  He completed a B.S. from the University of
Wisconsin Stevens Point in 1971, M.S.T. University of Nebraska, in '77 and a B.A.
in Studio Art from Bellevue University in '97.  Currently, Greg is employed with the
Fisheries Division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in Aquatic Education.
He teaches fishing, fish identification, about frogs and turtles and fish printing.

Hartel has integrated his lifelong love of art with his passion of wildlife and nature.
While his senior show at Bellevue University was in ceramic, wood and bronze sculpture,
his primary mediums are pen and ink and watercolor drawings.  His drawings depict
wildlife and scenes from nature.  Great effort is focused on details of the anatomy of
his subjects, resulting in a combination of technical biology illustrations and studio art.

Kimmel Gallery is located downstairs at the Morton-James Library, 923 1st Corso, in
Nebraska City
.  For the easiest access to the exhibit, please enter through the south
door.

Hours for the exhibit are the same as library hours, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. -
6 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., closed Sundays.

Greg's art exhibit will continue to run through October 5th at Kimmel Gallery,  so, if you
can't make it this week, you'll still have about 2 more weeks to check it out.
