CONESTOGA MAKES DRAMATIC GAINS IN STATE READING TESTS
Over 90 percent of Conestoga 3rd-6th grade students met or exceeded state reading
goals and 74 percent met or exceeded the mathematics standards, according to 2011
state test results. About 80 percent of Conestoga middle school students met or exceeded
state math standards and 73 percent of met or exceeded Nebraska reading standards.
11th graders at Conestoga improved with 2011 reading scores of 84 percent reaching or
exceeding state goals while 44 percent met or surpassed the goals in the first year of state-
wide math testing.
The writing results showed that 93 percent of the school’s fourth graders are proficient.
Conestoga eighth graders have over 90 percent proficiency in writing assessments since
2009 and continue to be consistently above the state average.
“Students and teachers focused work on reading and writing has paid off”, said Elementary
Principal Eric Dennis, noting that the scores on the new state reading test improved from 72.5
percent of the elementary students meeting or exceeding standards in 2010 to 90.5 percent in
2011. Our small elementary class sizes of about 17 students per classroom allows us to meet
the kids at their level and help them succeed, said Dennis.
Conestoga students performed higher than the state average in 14 of 16 grade level test scores
in reading, math and writing, said Curriculum Director, Robin Frost. “We saw a large percentage
point gain in reading at all levels. There are a couple areas of concern, but we will use these
results to drill down and identify the areas needing improvement to continue this track of progress”,
said Frost. Frost says, “Our staff and students have reason to be proud of the progress made this
past year.
Results for Conestoga’s 7th and 8th grade math exceed the Nebraska average by 19 percent and
11th grade reading proficiency is 17 percent above the state average, said Secondary Principal
David Friedli. “These results are a compliment to our students and teachers. Our students know
these tests matter to our school and they take it seriously. This is evidence of our student’s pride in
Conestoga,” said Friedli.
Parents will receive a report on their child’s scores from the school district soon. The 2011 performance
scores released on August 29th are considered as initial results since they could change slightly before
the scores are final in October.

Greenblatt & Seay proudly announce the FIFTEENTH ANNUAL SCHOOLHOUSE FIDDLING BEE. This
historical, hysterical event will take place on Sunday, October 9, at 2:30 PM, downstairs in the Old Avoca,

Twin Fiddler's Contest, a Fee-Fi-Faux Fiddler's Contest (fiddle tunes played on any instrument other than
a fiddle), and a Hocus-Pocus Contest, (cross-tuning, sound effects, dancing, etc.), which will give fiddlers
an opportunity to play tunes that are usually not allowed in any other contest. The prizes for the winners in
the Open Division are $100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd place, and $25 for 3rd place. Prizes will also be
awarded for 1st place in the other contests.
