THE KIDS NEED YOUR HELP!
Hunger is an evil thing. Without enough good food, your immune system becomes compromised and you can become sick more often. Hunger can make you not very pleasant to be around sometimes. We've all had that feeling from time to time. We get a little grumpy and think, 'I just need a little something to eat and I'll feel better'. When you're a child, it's difficult to concentrate on schoolwork when you're hungry, because you can only think about when and where your next meal is coming from and, unfortunately, some children only have 'a little something to eat'.
Throughout the school year, the Backpack Program helps to provide for those children, age preschool - 6th grade, who might not have enough food to sustain them during their time at home. During the week they receive a meal at school, but that could be their only meal of the day. Sadly, when they go home, they might not have anything else to eat.
When you donate to the Conestoga Backpack Program, the school staff sends those items home with more than 30 kids. Clean clothes and hygiene items are also needed.
You may donate items at any time through May, at Murray State Bank, at Conestoga Elementary School, or you may call Jill, 402-660-3543, and she'll arrange to have your items picked up at your home.
These suggested items should be somewhat easy for small children to open and prepare:

100 Account Owners to Receive $100 Bonus Each
First National Bank of Omaha and Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg today announced the $100 Automatic Investment Plan (AIP) Bonus opportunity for 2016.
The first 100 NEST Direct Plan or NEST Advisor Plan account owners to either set up or increase their current monthly AIP amounts by December 30 will each receive a $100 bonus into their accounts. To be eligible, an account owner who starts an AIP must set up a $25 minimum monthly contribution; an account owner who already contributes through AIP must increase the contribution amount by a minimum of $25.
AIP is a NEST feature that allows participants to set it and forget it by setting up automatic, recurring contributions directly from their personal checking or savings bank accounts. It can be established at the time of account opening or later by logging into the account.
“Saving for college is an important part of financial planning. Setting up automatic contributions can help, and this is a great opportunity to reward our customers for taking these steps to save,” said State Treasurer Stenberg, Trustee of NEST. “We hope to demonstrate that adding as little as $25 more a month to your child’s 529 plan can yield benefits that will pay off in the long run. Even a small contribution made today can grow over time and help a family pay for college.”
“Saving for college requires continual attention, even when busy schedules and daily financial needs pile up, which is why the NEST College Savings team makes it a priority to reward account owners who increase their 529 savings,” said Deborah Goodkin, Managing Director, Savings Plans, First National Bank of Omaha. “Our goal with the $100 AIP Bonus Scholarship is to remind parents that contributing to their children’s 529 plans is extremely important for their college education and future beyond. Contributing monthly to a 529 plan is even easier if you set up an automatic contribution.”
The new or increased AIP contribution amount must be active on the account through December 30. Participation is open to residents of all 50 states and the District of Columbia who are owners of a NEST Direct or NEST Advisor College Savings account.
The expected date for the bonuses to be deposited into the first 100 participants’ accounts is January 31, 2017. The bonus will not be paid out in cash, but will be invested in each 529 account. The bonus is nontransferable and limited to one bonus per account owner.

NEEDED ~ CASS COUNTY CASA ADVOCATES!
Cass Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is currently recruiting CASA advocates to speak on behalf of abused and neglected children in Cass County. The next training session is scheduled for January 2017 for five weeks. We are also seeking male volunteers as more than 60% of our children are male.
What does a Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteer do? Each CASA volunteer is screened, trained and completes 30 hours of pre-service training. The training consists of 15 hours of online training and 15 hours of in-person training. Once trained, CASA volunteers are assigned under the Juvenile Court jurisdiction to speak on behalf of a child to ensure the needs and interests of abused and neglected children are being met.
Who are CASA volunteers? Our active volunteers are individuals from our community who work part-time, full-time or are retired. Volunteers commit to one year with a child, but seldom leave a case until it has been terminated.

SGT. KRINGLE'S KIDS
Every veteran that has selflessly served our nation deserves to treat his or her children with gifts on Christmas morning. However, many veterans live without the means to provide Christmas gifts to their families.
Round the Bend Steakhouse is excited to announce SGT Kringles Kids, an initiative to provide children of military veterans in need with gifts this holiday season. Through a partnership with the Marine Corps League (MCL) and the Marine Corps League Auxiliary (MCLA), all gifts brought to Round the Bend Steakhouse will be directly donated to disadvantaged children of veterans, so that every military family may enjoy the Christmas they deserve. Now through Dec 16, visitors to Round the Bend Steakhouse are encouraged to bring an unwrapped and new toy to place under the Christmas tree in the dining room. As a show of gratitude, SGT Kringles Kids participants will receive a free appetizer.
“For us there are two reasons for our freedom, Jesus and the American soldier. We are excited to show the love of Jesus to our soldiers’ kids by putting them first this Christmas,” said TJ & Tifini Olson, owners of Round the Bend Steakhouse.

The Lofte Community Theatre near Manley is ready to help get you into the holiday spirit. Their December production, “Twas the Night Before Christmas” opens on Saturday, December 3 at 7:30pm.
“Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.” But, wait! A mouse is stirring - because Santa missed his house last year. Before you can say, “Merry Christmas!” we’re off on the wild adventures of a mouse, an elf and a spunky little girl who just won’t take, “No,” for an answer.
This script is a modern-day treatment of the traditional 19th century classic tale. Together a mouse named Amos and his human friend, Emily embark upon a journey to visit Santa Claus. Directed by Kevin Colbert, this energetic holiday tale will see the characters engage in a sword fight, a squirt gun battle and a perilous airplane ride. This show is specifically styled to appeal to our younger audience members, but children of all ages will enjoy this holiday romp.
Amos the mouse is played by Lofte newcomer Austin J. Brady of Lincoln. His human friend Emily is played by Shakeida Bullis of Bellevue. Rounding out the cast of colorful characters are Greg Leger and Doug Rothgeb of Omaha and Keri Hogue of Elmwood.
In coordination with this production, the Lofte is holding a special fundraiser where children of all ages can meet Santa and the rest of the cast. You will have the opportunity to eat a catered lunch right on stage, visit with Santa and even get your picture taken with the Jolly Old Elf himself. This special luncheon is being held at noon prior to our three Sunday matinees. Advance reservations are required. This would be a great multi-generational family event or company outing. Tickets to the luncheon are just $20.
Production dates for the show are December 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18. All seats are just $19. Those interested can call the Lofte box office at 402.234.2553 for reservations.

You will have the opportunity to eat a catered lunch right on stage, visit with Santa and even get your pictures taken with the big guy himself.

Plattsmouth Community School District Adult Education begins its 40th year with a new focus on College and Career Readiness. The Federal Government has charged all adult education programs with preparing students for college and the workplace. Plattsmouth is stepping up. PCSD will integrate job search, workplace skills, and college preparation into its GED, English language, and Adult Basic Education courses.
To meet this challenge, an additional class session is being offered on Thursday mornings.
Classes are offered Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday during the public school year at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., at the PACE Center, 15508 2nd Ave. The PACE Center is located across from the high school to the west.

LOOKING FOR PART-TIME WORK?
The following is an employment opportunity available to older adults in Cass County.
Experience Works is a national, non-profit organization funded by the US Dept of Labor to administer the Senior Community Service Employment Program, which assists people 55 and older in getting updated training to assist in returning to the workforce. This is a federally funded program and offers a no-cost employment service to older adults who qualify.
Once accepted into the program, individuals are placed in a training site in or near their community, where they gain on the job experience while working 20-21 hours/week at $8/hour.
We also help with skill assessments, computer training, resumes, cover letters, job search, etc.
The goal is that through the training and job search assistance we gain help older adults gain good jobs in or around their communities.
