2018 05 23 American Pickers

If you're a fan of the American Pickers TV show on the History Channel, or if you just have a bunch of vintage 'junk' that you'd like to get rid of, check this out.

The Pickers plan to film in Nebraska this summer! They're looking for folks with unique antique collections and interesting stories.  Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, only seek private collectors. Stores, flea markets, auctions and businesses open to the public will not be scouted out.

If you think you have an interesting collection the guys might be interested in, contact them at 1-855-OLD-RUST, (653-7878) or drop them an email at AmericanPickers@cineflix.com.

Who knows? You might be on a future episode of the American Pickers!

Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands:

Now is Your Time to Quit Tobacco

Keeping New Year’s self-improvement promises can be difficult. Tobacco Education & Advocacy of the Midlands and the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline want to help you make 2018 a tobacco-free year.

Through June 15 (while supplies last), the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline is providing extra assistance for those who are ready to quit with a two-week supply of no-cost nicotine replacement therapy.

"Quitting isn't easy, but with the Quitline, tobacco-users have a whole team of support on their side," Autumn Sky Burns, T.E.A.M. Coordinator said. "Get the tools you need to be successful by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW, talking with your healthcare provider, and building that support from friends and family.

Call the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline (available 24/7) and ask about the no-cost nicotine patches, gum or lozenges. This offer is available for Nebraska residents who are 18 years of age or older. Callers will be screened for medical eligibility to receive the medication, which is shipped directly to the caller’s home. All information provided to the Quitline is confidential.

“It is never too late to quit. Quitting brings immediate advantages to not just tobacco-users, but their families are well,” Burns said.

For help quitting, the Nebraska Tobacco Quitline is available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669), and for Spanish services at 1-855-DÉJELO-YA (1-855-355-3569). Translation services are also available in more than 170 languages. For additional resources visit www.QuitNow.ne.gov.

Funding for this project is provided by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services/Tobacco Free Nebraska Program as a result of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.

NEST 529 College Savings Celebrates 529 Day

$100 Bonus to Be Awarded to First 100 New Accounts

First National Bank of Omaha and Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg are helping new account owners kick start their college savings just in time for 529 Day with the NEST 529 College Savings Plan $100 bonus program.

The program, which launched today (May 15) and runs through May 31, will award the first 100 new college savings accounts with a $100 bonus each, when using a promotional code available at NEST529.com/bonus100. To qualify, the new account must be opened for a beneficiary age 8 or younger with a minimum $100 contribution. Accounts can be opened both online and through the mail.

“As 529 Day quickly approaches, we are reminding families about saving for college and opening 529 accounts if they haven’t done so already,” said Deborah Goodkin, Managing Director, Savings Plans, First National Bank of Omaha. “Our goal is to encourage these families to prioritize saving by giving each a $100 bonus, serving as a head start for their children to one day attend their dream school.”

Each year, May 29 (5/29) is recognized as National 529 College Savings Plan Day. During the month of May, college savings plans around the country offer promotional and educational initiatives to help generate awareness of 529 plans.

“The sooner families begin saving for their children’s academic futures, the better prepared they will be for college expenses. By offering an incentive to take that all-important first step, we hope we can ease the financial burden, helping more children pursue higher education,” said Treasurer Stenberg, Trustee of NEST.

About NEST 529
NEST 529 is a tax-advantaged 529 college savings plan and provides four plans to help make saving for college simple and affordable: NEST Direct College Savings Plan, the NEST Advisor College Savings Plan, the TD Ameritrade 529 College Savings Plan, and the State Farm College Savings Plan. The Nebraska State Treasurer serves as Program Trustee. First National Bank of Omaha serves as Program Manager, and all investments are approved by the Nebraska Investment Council. Families nationwide are saving for college using Nebraska’s 529 College Savings Plans, which have more than 254,000 accounts, including 79,000 in Nebraska. Visit NEST529.com and treasurer.nebraska.gov for more information.

2012 09 19 RED CROSS

Blood Donation Opportunities to June 15, 2018

Summer blood donations can help to prevent a shortage

The American Red Cross is counting on volunteer donors to give blood and help ensure patient needs can be met this summer.

Around Memorial Day, the Red Cross sees a steep decline in blood donations.
Busy summer schedules, vacations and school breaks also cause a drop in donations.
Accidents and medical emergencies don’t take a summer break – patients need blood every minute, every day.

In the summer of 1973, Ramona Johnson was playing at the park when she was injured jumping off the swings.  She was bleeding profusely from a 7-inch gash in her leg. By the time she reached the hospital, she needed an emergency transfusion.  She credits the donors who took the time to give blood with helping to save her life.

Johnson’s childhood experience receiving blood compelled her to make her first blood donation more than 10 years ago.  “A little voice told me that this would be a great way to give back,” she said.  “I have been faithfully donating every eight weeks since.”

The public is asked to schedule an appointment to help ensure that hospitals and patients have the blood they need this summer.  Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

In thanks, all those who come to donate blood or platelets now through June 10, 2018, will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane.
(Restrictions apply; see amazon.com/gc-legal. More information and details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Together.)  Additionally, those who come to give May 25-29, will receive an exclusive Red Cross branded T-shirt, while supplies last.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.
Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.  High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

About the American Red Cross
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families.
The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.

SAVE THE DATE-
SATURDAY, AUGUST 18!

2nd ANNUAL FUN RUN FUNDRAISER
for
MURRAY FIRE DEPT

Donations for prizes are needed for the top run finishers in male, female and youth categories.
Ideas would be gift cards or monies to purchase awards or prizes.

Kids, ask your group, Scouts, 4-H, church youth group, or just a bunch of your friends to volunteer to cheer the runners on!
It is a 'hilly' run so runners appreciate the encouragement!

Food and beverages are needed to supply the hungry racers after the race.

Also, can we get any volunteers to set up and tear down the course with cones, tables and water, etc.?

Spread the word by posting to your social pages and sharing with friends and family!

If you want to be part of this event in any way, please contact Theresa McClatchey at bradandtheresa@gmail.com or 402-651-6068.

Thanks so much!

2018 05 23 LOFTE Miracle Worker 1

The Lofte Community Theatre, located in Manley, NE will stage William Gibson’s award-winning drama, The Miracle Worker June 1 - 3, and June 7 - 10..

Set in 1880s, Tuscumbia, Alabama this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence.

Over the years, the play has also successfully been adapted for screen and television. Most notably, the 1962 film adaptation which garnered Oscar wins for both Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke.

“Staging The Miracle Worker has been a labor of love.” said Lofte Community Theatre Executive Director, Kevin Colbert. “As plays go, The Miracle Worker is already a heavy piece of literature. Add to that, the complicated staging which must be timed perfectly, and you have some wonderfully challenging obstacles that any actor would love to sink their teeth into. It’s just been a lot of fun, and a lot of learning..”

The cast of The Miracle Worker includes Gary Williams, John Bell, Emma Johnson, Riley Perez, Rachel Radloff and Skyler Radloff of Omaha, Rosalie Duffy, Gabriella Bakirane, Cathy Apolot, Wade Mumford, Nicholas Roth, and Brenna J. Thompson of Lincoln, Kyler Jones, Beatrice Quam, and Sarah G. Riha of Louisville, Melinda Mead, and Addison Broderson of Plattsmouth, Kevin Colbert of Weeping Water, Lilly Frields of Nebraska City, and Lily Pope of Eagle.

Tickets for The Miracle Worker can purchased by calling the Lofte Community Theatre box office at 402-234-2553, or by visiting the theatre’s website at www.lofte.com and clicking on “Tickets”. Curtain time for the show is 7 pm and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm. For more information, call the Lofte Community theatre or visit www.lofte.com.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT LENDING PROGRAM

The Great Plains Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association has a wonderful instrument lending program, so please share this information with folks that you know. Here is the information from Jim Wood:

"We are in full swing looking for kids ages 5 to 16 who want to learn to play a bluegrass/old time instrument!
The instruments we are lending include guitar, fiddles of different sizes, banjo, and mandolin, and have recently been gifted with a fine Dobro, thanks to Doug Van Horn.
These instruments may be borrowed for a year as long as the learner has a mentor from our music association.
The mentor will be selected by the student and parent.
This mentor will give the Instrument lending committee a report of progress every three months."

If you wish to get an application to this Lending program, please contact Jim Wood at 402-397-4673 or jkwood@unomaha.edu.
