Nebraska Treasurer Wants to
Return Military Medals to Rightful Owners

Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg reminds Nebraskans to check unclaimed property records for money they may be owed, as well as for loved ones’ military medals that may have been stored in safe deposit boxes.

“Every year, our Unclaimed Property Division receives the contents of more than 200 safe deposit boxes from Nebraska banks. The contents often include jewelry, watches, savings bonds, and personal documents, as well as medals earned in school, at work, from fraternal organizations, and occasionally in military service,” Stenberg said.

To date, the Treasurer’s Office is holding six military medals from four safe deposit boxes turned over to the state, Stenberg said. The medals, the names of the owners listed on the safe deposit boxes, and the years the Treasurer’s Office received the medals include the following:

· Mary Turner and Patsy Turner, Lincoln, U.S. Navy Fidelity, Zeal, Obedience, 2016.

· Marijane Austin, Plattsmouth, U.S. Armed Forces Expeditionary Service and National Defense, 2011.

· Adrian Perry and Andre Perry, Bellevue, two medals for Military Merit, 2011.

· No owner listed, Rifle and Grenade, 1991.

“We would very much like to find the rightful owners of these medals and return them to their owners or their families,” Stenberg said. “These medals are tangible reminders of the sacrifices made throughout our history by our brave men and women in the service of our country. In particular during this Fourth of July holiday, we offer our gratitude.”

Military medals turned over to the Treasurer’s Office are held for at least 10 years in the name of the safe deposit box owner. After 10 years, if the owner has not been located, the Treasurer’s Office may give the medal to a designated custodian for safekeeping, Stenberg said. The Treasurer’s policy, however, is to retain possession of all military medals until they are claimed by the owner or the owner’s family.

Stenberg said a law passed by the Legislature in 2012 requires that any military medal removed from a safe deposit box or any other safekeeping repository – when the lease has expired because of failure to pay rent – be retained by the bank and eventually turned over to the State Treasurer after the required dormancy period.

After 10 years, the Treasurer then may turn over the medal for safekeeping to a veteran’s organization, a government entity, or the organization that awarded the medal. The Treasurer’s Office holds all military medals in the names of the owners of the safe deposit boxes and does not include military medals in its online auction of safe deposit boxes. The office’s last auction was last October.

Ways to search for unclaimed property and file claims include the following:

Check the Treasurer’s website at treasurer.nebraska.gov. Type a name in the search box on the home page or click on the Unclaimed Property tab at the top of the page.
For amounts less than $500, owners may file claims online through the website.
For an amount greater than $500, an owner may complete the claim form on the website and mail to the State Treasurer’s Office, Unclaimed Property Division, 809 P St., Lincoln, NE 68508-1390. The form must be notarized.
Call the Unclaimed Property Division at 1-877-572-9688 toll free or 402-471-8497. Calls are taken 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays.
Visit the Unclaimed Property office at 809 P Street in Lincoln or in Suite 2005 of the Capitol. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. An owner should bring a driver’s license and Social Security card.
If filing on behalf of a deceased family member for an amount greater than $500, the owner must provide documentation including a will, death certificate, obituary notice, and personal representative documents.

2018 07 04 Military medals

The Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office is searching for the rightful owners of military medals, including these, top two, Military Merit; bottom row, left to right, Rifle and Grenade; U.S. Armed Forces Expeditionary Service and National Defense; and U.S. Navy Fidelity, Zeal, Obedience.

SAVE THE DATE-
SATURDAY, AUGUST 18!

2nd ANNUAL FUN RUN FUNDRAISER
for
MURRAY FIRE DEPT

Donations for prizes are needed for the top run finishers in male, female and youth categories.
Ideas would be gift cards or monies to purchase awards or prizes.

Kids, ask your group, Scouts, 4-H, church youth group, or just a bunch of your friends to volunteer to cheer the runners on!
It is a 'hilly' run so runners appreciate the encouragement!

Food and beverages are needed to supply the hungry racers after the race.

Also, can we get any volunteers to set up and tear down the course with cones, tables and water, etc.?

Spread the word by posting to your social pages and sharing with friends and family!

If you want to be part of this event in any way, please contact Theresa McClatchey at bradandtheresa@gmail.com or 402-651-6068.

Thanks so much!

LUCAS MINOR is a local, talented, musician who grew up in Murray, NE, attending Conestoga Elementary and Jr-High. At the start of 9th grade, he moved and went to high school in Bellevue, NE.

Lucas has been performing publicly for about 4 years. He started taking piano lessons when he was 6 years old, played clarinet in marching band competition all through high school and is self-taught on guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, and other instruments.

As a member of the country gospel group, Visual Faith, for about 2 years, Lucas performed beatboxing and played keyboard and guitar at many churches and other area events. He also recently sang 'Go Rest High on the Mountain' in tribute to one of his beloved, adopted-grandmas at her funeral.

Some of the venues where he and his band have performed are at Murray's Freedom Festival; PlaMor Ballroom, Lincoln; Buck's Bar & Grill, Venice, NE; Bushwackers, Omaha; Cruising’ Main, Hop Yard and DJ's Dugout, Plattsmouth; Lorton Lounge, Lorton, NE; Kabo's, Beatrice, NE; Corner Bar, Fremont, NE; and at the Applejack Festival and Table Creek Golf Course in Nebraska City, among many other venues and private parties. He and the band have recently toured the upper Midwest, going into Colorado, Wyoming and both North and South Dakota.

Songwriting is one of Luke's greatest pleasures. Performing both individually and with his band, they've entertained many with both cover music and his own songs - one of which was in the nation-wide Lake of the Ozarks Radio contest last fall. Of the 53 songs entered, his 'Dirt Road', went to number 3 and stayed among the top 8 rankings for 5 weeks of the 8-week-long contest. Another, Conestoga Road, is about growing up in Murray, going to church and football games. He also writes about his experiences traveling and performing on the road. Two of the fan favorites are 'Highway 50 Blues' and 'Honky Tonks and Cheap Cigars'.

You may contact Lucas directly to see about scheduling him and/or his band for your upcoming event.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT LENDING PROGRAM

The Great Plains Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association has a wonderful instrument lending program, so please share this information with folks that you know. Here is the information from Jim Wood:

"We are in full swing looking for kids ages 5 to 16 who want to learn to play a bluegrass/old time instrument!
The instruments we are lending include guitar, fiddles of different sizes, banjo, and mandolin, and have recently been gifted with a fine Dobro, thanks to Doug Van Horn.
These instruments may be borrowed for a year as long as the learner has a mentor from our music association.
The mentor will be selected by the student and parent.
This mentor will give the Instrument lending committee a report of progress every three months."

If you wish to get an application to this Lending program, please contact Jim Wood at 402-397-4673 or jkwood@unomaha.edu.
