American Red Cross Urges Blood Donors to Double Their Lifesaving Impact
Just 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood, and only a fraction of those eligible
actually give. This October, the American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors double
the lifesaving impact they have on the blood supply by asking a friend or family member to make
an appointment to give blood with them.
All blood types are needed, especially O negative, B negative, and A negative.  Type O negative,
the universal blood type, can potentially be transfused to patients with any blood type. Eligible
donors with these blood types can also double their impact by donating double red cells – where
available – giving two units of red cells during one donation appointment. Donors can give double
red cells every 112 days or up to three times per year.

How to Donate Blood
Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.  Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are generally in good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

About the American Red Cross

Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.

Innovative Youth Corn Challenge

Today’s agricultural world faces several challenges, one of them being the decline of our
most valuable resource, the future workforce. While Nebraska’s population under 18 years
of age grew between the years of 2000 and 2009, this increase was seen in only ten of the
93 counties. One strategy to keep youth in rural communities and involved in production
agriculture is to involve them in projects that encourage active participation and demonstrate
the wide array of careers related to production agriculture.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension and the Nebraska Corn Board have teamed
up to offer the first Innovative Youth Corn Challenge contest. This contest, open to 4-H members
(age 10 & older as of Jan. 1st) or FFA members (in-school members), will guide youth through
all aspects of corn production, as well as the agricultural careers related to corn production.
Youth will be challenged to implement a production practice different than normal to determine
if they increased their yield. Economics and sustainability of the practice will also be considered.
Yields, cropping history, and production information will be collected in the Corn Yield Challenge
management summary.
Goals of the contest are: achieve new, innovative, and economically feasible crop production
methods to improve yields; provide research data for producers to implement in their operations;
distribute data to corn producers, researchers, and agri-businesses for decision making purposes;
introduce youth to a variety of agronomic professionals, including corn producers.
Youth will work with an adult mentor throughout the process. Mentors can be extension faculty, ag
teachers, or other qualified agronomy professionals.

Cash prizes and plaques will be given to the first, second, and third place teams. First place will
receive $1,000, second place will receive $500, and third place will receive $250.  A data comple-
tion and innovation award will also be given.

To participate, youth must complete and return an entry form by March 1st to the Fillmore County
Extension Office in Geneva, NE. Forms can be downloaded at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth/activities.
For more information, contact Brandy VanDeWalle at bvandewalle2@unl.edu or 402.759.3712.

2010_BREAST_CANCER_PIN_002
RELAY FOR LIFE.......

Do you know that you can make a donation any time of the year that will stay in Cass County?

If you've ever been touched by cancer in any way, shape or form, you know how devastating it can be.  Family members or friends might have or had cancer and you don't know what to do to show your support.
Sending emails and/or written mail has always been an effective form of fundraising and it is normally done on an individual participant level (sent to friends and family). Teams usually do things such as bake sales, car washes, all you can eat breakfasts, yard sales, etc.

You may still direct your donation to a particular team or individual - just as you've always done OR you may make one at the Relay level, with no particular team in mind.

 So, here's how it works..........

Click on "Donate" where you will have a choice - Donate To Team OR Donate To Relay
If you have no preference then please select "Donate to Relay".  Whichever way you go and however much you donate, please remember that all the money raised stays in Cass County and may improve and even save the lives of people you know,

I do encourage all of you to logon to the web site as well as www.cancer.org for a wealth of information.  Donations can also be made via phone at:
 402-393-5801

Thanks for helping out when it makes such a difference - it's really appreciated by so many!

Don't Dress For Dinner
The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley announces its fall farce, "Don't Dress For Dinner,".
The fast-paced script by RobinHawdon sees Bernard carefully preparing a romantic
weekend in the country with his mistress.  His wife is off to visit her mother, a gourmet
chef has been hired to cater the evening and Bernard's friend will provide the alibi.
What could possibly go wrong?  As is in every scripted farce, the audience is soon
witness to a combination of misunderstandings, fibs and impossible situations.  Lofte
Artistic Director Kevin Colbert produced this show during Mahoney State Park's winter
season several years ago where it still holds the record for highest attendance.
Kevin Colbert both directs and plays the lead in the Lofte production.  The play also
stars Shari Hoelker and Doug Rothgeb of Omaha, Renae Koehler of Firth, Kevin
Holdorf of Manley and newcomer Toni Santee of Plattsmouth.  Production dates are
October 27-30.  Thursday through Saturday curtain times are 7:30pm.
Sunday shows are 2pm matinees.  General Admission tickets are $17 and can be
purchased either online at wwww.Lofte.com or by calling the box office (402) 234-2553.
The Lofte is holding a special fundraising event in conjunction with this production.
From October 27-30, audience members will have the opportunity to come early and
have a dinner theater experience right on stage!  A cordon bleu menu has been speci-
fically designed to match the gourmet meal in "Don't Dress For Dinner."  The cost is $25
in addition to the show ticket and advance reservations are required.  Those who are
interested should call the box office with questions.
