What Haunts Old Home Owners?
Plattsmouth Conservancy Series presents Don Browers
Maintaining an older house can be a nightmare, but it doesn’t have to keep you up nights. Are your windows jammed closed? Do you have to prop them open? Do you have broken sash cords? Cracked glass? Are you ready to save some windows?
The third presentation in The Plattsmouth Conservancy’s series “What Haunts Old Home Owners?” will be Tuesday, June 11, 6:30 to 8 p.m., in the lower level of the Plattsmouth Library.
Join us as Don Browers guides you in the practical methods of maintenance and repair of historic double hung wood windows. He will demonstrate the materials, tools and methods used to save your windows at a fraction of the cost of replacing them.
For more than 20 years, Don and his wife, Marjorie, worked to renovate their 1921 brick four-square house in Dundee. In 1994 he started writing a column for the Dundee-Memorial Park Association newsletter about his old house experiences and techniques called the "Old House Mechanic", because as Don says “It is easier to write about old house renovation rather than to actually do it.”
His columns are still published monthly and all of them are available online at the Dundee Memorial Park Association web site. They are written from the view point of the average old house owner and do-it-yourselfer because Don has not worked in any home remodeling or repair business. He worked in the television business until retiring from KETV in 2008.
Don has been a presenter on old house renovation topics at the Restore Omaha conference every year since it began in 2005.

"Dixie Swim Club."
Written by the team of Jones, Hope and Wooten, 'Dixie' is the story of five southern women whose friendship began while on their college swim team. Now, years later, they set aside one long weekend every August to recharge relationships and meddle in each other's lives.
Directed by Kevin Colbert, the five 'Dixie' women are played by Allison Bauers of Louisville, Sharon Strassler Kryger of La Vista, Betty Colbert of Weeping Water and Dawn Holdorf and Hope Hibler both of Manley.

HELP PATIENTS in NEED this SUMMER with BLOOD
The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood this summer, helping to ensure a sufficient supply for patients in need and allowing them to create their summer of stories. Below are just a few examples of patients recently helped by Red Cross blood donors:
1. A liver transplant recipient needed 50 units of red blood cells and 50 units of plasma.
2. A mother who had complications during childbirth was given 32 units of red blood cells, 10 units of platelets, 10 units of plasma and 15 units of cryoprecipitate.
3.A trauma patient required 15 units of red blood cells.
Blood donations tend to decline during the summer, when many regular donors are on vacation and schools are out of session. However, the need for blood is constant. All blood types are currently needed, especially O negative, which is the universal blood type and can potentially be transfused to any patient.
Blood donors are encouraged to share their donation story with the Red Cross by visiting redcrossblood.org/summer. The Summer of Stories campaign is helping to raise awareness about the constant need for blood and encourage regular donations.
