'YOUNG EAGLES' SOAR

09-12-2010_YOUNG_EAGLES__044

On Sunday morning, September 12, 2010, if you were north of Murray around the Plattsmouth airport, you probably saw a lot of activity in the beautiful blue sky above.
09-12-2010_YOUNG_EAGLE_SAM_SPARKS_1
Sam Sparks is ready to fly!
The Young Eagles program was offering flights around the immediate area, free of charge, to young people between the ages of 8 and 17.  Many different types of general aviation airplanes were there giving the opportunity for kids to go flying.

Dalton King's ready for take-off............
Since the program began in 1992, over 1.5 million Young Eagles have enjoyed a flight. Through Young Eagles, kids not only learn about how an airplane works, they also see their community from a new perspective.

On the right is Lucas Minor, waiting to board the South Dakota National Guard's small aircraft, along with some friends and an EAA volunteer pilot.

EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Chapter 80 actively participates in this exciting program.  Its' volunteer pilots have flown 6300 Young Eagles since its beginning in 1992.  The volunteers are proud to share their passion for flight with today's youth.

GOING FISHING?   GET 2 for 1!

There are fish stories and there are 'fish-y' stories,
but you might have had to see this for yourself to believe it!
In today's economy, people are finding all kinds of ways to save time and money.  Even our favorite hobbies are being 'scaled-down', so to speak.
It was no different when fishing the cool waters of Lac La Croix in Minnesota last week for Phil Callahan of rural Nehawka.  The temps must have been just right, and the fish really hungry, because they were sure biting.

Phil cast his line out into the beautiful clear blue lake and brought in a 20-pound, 42-inch northern pike. He got the fish in the boat and started to remove the hook - when out of the big fish's mouth swam a live12-inch eel!

Now that's what I call being 'e-fish-ient'!

KIMMEL GALLERY DISPLAYS WORK
of
MURRAY WILDLIFE ARTIST
When you're in Nebraska City for the Applejack Festival this weekend, stop to see the art exhibit at Kimmel Gallery by one of Murray's residents, retired high school
teacher and wildlife artist, Greg Hartel.

Greg is a Wisconsin native who taught at Bellevue East Hish School for 30 years
before retiring.  While at East High, he taught A.P. Biology, Biology, Environmental

Education, Studio Art and Stage Craft.  He completed a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point in 1971, M.S.T. University of Nebraska, in '77 and a B.A.in Studio Art from Bellevue University in '97.  Currently, Greg is employed with the Fisheries Division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission in Aquatic Education.  He teaches fishing, fish identification, about frogs and turtles and fish printing.

Hartel has integrated his lifelong love of art with his passion of wildlife and nature.
While his senior show at Bellevue University was in ceramic, wood and bronze sculpture, his primary mediums are pen and ink and watercolor drawings.  His drawings depict wildlife and scenes from nature.  Great effort is focused on details of the anatomy of his subjects, resulting in a combination of technical biology illustrations and studio art.

Kimmel Gallery is located downstairs at the Morton-James Library, 923 1st Corso, in Nebraska City.  For the easiest access to the exhibit, please enter through the south door.

Hours for the exhibit are the same as library hours, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., closed Sundays.

Greg's art exhibit will continue to run through October 5th at Kimmel Gallery,  so, if you can't make it this week, you'll still have about 2 more weeks to check it out.
