Our first calendar for 2025 arrived last week. It's a beautiful one, with photographs reflecting the months as most of us might perceive them to be.  Time just keeps ticking away and in the blink of an eye, it'll be Christmas, and in another blink, Easter.

I don't know about you, but sometimes I just wish time would slow down. It seems we're tired of the holidays before the actual day even arrives.  By the time it finally gets here, we will have been bombarded with festive store displays and advertising several weeks, sometimes, months ahead of time, making us tired, grumpy and just glad it's over.

Most of us already know when the major religious holidays are, and we make note of special secular holidays of birthdays and anniversaries on our phones or wall calendars.  New Year's Day is always on January 1st; (or did you forget?); Valentime's Day, February 14; Mother's Day, second Sunday of May; Memorial Day, last Monday of May; Father's Day, third Sunday of June; 4th of July, (do you really need a reminder in May when that day is?); Labor Day, first Monday in September; and Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November.  Do we really need to have constant reminders each time we enter a store or turn on the TV?

I've always been sloth-like slow. Dad always said, "Life goes fast enough, slow down and enjoy it". Dad and I were always the last ones sitting at the supper table, because we'd eat slowly and talk about things. It's one of my most cherished memories.  We always got to school and work on time and did our jobs in a timely manner, but we always took our time. Mom was always in a rush. Dad would say, “Do you want it done fast or right? Because you’re probably not getting both.”

A lifetime of very low blood pressure, now combined with vertigo, tends to make me be extra cautious in my movements, standing up, walking, turning around quickly, etc., makes me dizzy and light-headed.  I'm in no hurry to go anywhere, but especially not into the New Year when it's only the middle of September. 

Slow down.  Enjoy life!

+ Check the URL of the story. Example: abcnews.com is a legitimate news source, however abcnews.com.co is not. Anything that ends with something other than .com is likely to be a spoofed, highly edited, article.

+ If a well-known person is quoted, google the quote. It can be tracked back to the statement, when it was spoken or written and let you know if it and its source are legit.

+ You can reverse search a questionable image on Google, also. Right click the image, and copy the URL. Go to images.google.com and paste the URL to see where it came from.

+ Use these tool options to help you sort truth from fiction:

Politics: Factcheck.org or Politifact.com
General scams, email and Facebook hoaxes: Snopes.com or Truthorfiction.com

Have you changed your physical address since last voting? If so, now's the time to update your address with your Election Official.

Not a registered voter yet? You may fill out a form online, but it must be printed and mailed to your County Election Official.

If you're already registered, you may also apply for your Early Voting Form.
If you have vacations planned, expect to be very busy for the next few months, or want to avoid the chance of nasty weather on Election Day, early voting might be a good choice for you.

The Conestoga Backpack Program continues to furnish food to local families in need. The program serves the Murray, Nehawka, Union and Beaver Lake areas in southeast Nebraska, and will not turn anyone away.

Just by adding a few of the items listed below to your shopping list and picking them up, you'll be helping someone in a big way. Keep in mind that some of the children are very young and are possibly 'preparing' their own meals, so easy-to-open containers are a good option for little hands.

Canned soup
Granola bars
Fruit snacks
Dry pasta
Spaghetti sauce
Dry soup mixes
Canned meat (chicken, tuna)
Boxed prepared meal kits (Hamburger Helper, Rice-a-Roni)
Peanut butter
Jelly
Canned fruit and vegetables

Single-serve cereals

Also needed are hygienic supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, cotton swabs, tissues and toilet paper.

To make a monetary donation instead, a check made payable to 'CONESTOGA BACKPACK PROGRAM' may be mailed or deposited at Cornerstone Bank, 102 W Main St, Murray, NE 68409. 100% of all monies collected is used for food and hygienic supplies for the families.

To have the items picked up, call Jill at 402-660-3543 to make arrangements. As another alternative, you may drop them off at Cornerstone Bank in Murray or at their Beaver Lake location.
