4-H Community Service and Quilts of Valor

In 2011 and 2012 Nebraska 4-Hers are being “challenged” to participate in the Nebraska 4-H Quilts
of Valor Challenge.  By participating, 4-Hers from across the state will be making quilts to be donated
to soldiers or veterans of military service who have been touched by war. Volunteers are helping
4-Hers meet the challenge.

Quilts of Valor can be exhibited at the 2011 or 2012 county and state fairs.  This year, Quilts of Valor
will be donated to the National Foundation on Saturday morning, September 3, in the 4-H Building at
the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island.  The Nebraska 4-H Foundation will be hosting this event.

Cass County 4-Hers and volunteers partnered with Seams To Be Quilt Shoppe in Plattsmouth on July 11 to make a Quilt of Valor for donation and patriotic pillows for fair entry.  4-Hers and volunteers also worked on a Quilt of Valor during the annual Community Service Workshop Day, July 28, along with other “Care & Share” projects: Colleen Shrader Kids for Kwiltz quilts for emergency services, tote bags for the Child Saving Institute in Omaha, Conkerr Cancer pillow cases for seriously ill children in Omaha hospitals, kennel mats for the Plattsmouth Animal Shelter, and filled soup jars for Cass County food banks.

Deshler Area Chamber Promotes Nebraska through Cookbook

The Deshler Area Chamber is taking on an ambitious project to promote the state of Nebraska.
Plans are for a cookbook entitled “All Across Nebraska” featuring a recipe and noteworthy bit of
information about every municipality in the state alphabetically, from Abie to Yutan.

Using Alexandra as an example:  “ALEXANDRIA A new town was created and given the name
"Alexandria" by the railroad, the first town on the "ABC Railroad," (so named for the alphabetical
naming of stations on the line), followed by a recipe submitted by someone in or from the Alexandria
area and credited to that individual.

Recipes may reflect a town’s heritage or simply be a favorite of the submitter or in memory of someone
from your current or home town. Local eating establishments may want to promote themselves by sharing
their signature recipe. The cookbooks will be available at Grow Nebraska and throughout the state.

Alphabetically there are 540 Nebraska towns in the U.S. postal zip code listing. Lincoln and Omaha and
others have multiple zip codes but in the interest of space and simplicity consideration will be given to
selecting one recipe from each. Final recipe selections will be determined based upon relevance of
information and variety of recipes.

Please spread the word to friends and relatives – all across Nebraska!

Submit recipe, contributor’s name and your town’s information to:
Deshler Chamber
608 Alice Street
Deshler NE 68340
or grupenaomi@yahoo.com or call 402-365-7738 to request a submission form.

Proceeds from cookbook sales are designated to the Deshler Chamber scholarship fund. Thank you for
helping promote the hospitality and good taste of our great state of Nebraska!

BLOOD SUPPLIES RUNNING SERIOUSLY LOW

American Red Cross blood supplies remain at seriously low levels even after thousands
of area residents responded to the national appeal for blood donors.

With the recent heat wave, the Red Cross has seen an even bigger decline in the number
of blood donors.  The heat-related issues have forced the Red Cross to close blood drives
early or cancel blood drives altogether, resulting in the cancellation of hundreds of scheduled
blood donations.

Therefore, the Red Cross needs blood and platelet donors now more than ever.  All blood
types are needed, but especially O negative, B negative and A negative.

Together we can help save lives.
