 2022 12 14 MEGAPHONE MAN 1

Hello!

I want to introduce myself; my name is Ashley Wulf; I work at Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (NCDHH) as the Omaha Regional Advocate Specialist. I would like to explain a bit about NCDHH. The agency itself provides a variety of services for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Hearing loss, Deaf-Blind, and Late Deafness in the State of Nebraska. I focus on the Omaha region which includes several counties such as Boone, Nance, Platte, Polk, Colfax, Butler, Dodge, Saunders, Washington, Douglas, Sarpy, and Cass counties.

The purpose of my reaching out is that NCDHH wants to provide services to anyone who is deaf, hard of hearing, or has any form of hearing loss and collaborate with you. We have some services listed below.

NCDHH’s Services:

• Advocate Service

We provide advocacy to our clients and community for various reasons. For example, communication supports, ADA-related, and more.

• Hearing Aid Bank

We have two hearing aid bank program that focuses on age 19 and up. The program itself helps individuals with low income get a free or reduced-cost, refurbished, hearing aid(s). They only must pay for services related to hearing aids such as hearing tests, fitting and programming, ear molds, etc.

• Nebraska Specialized Telecommunication Equipment Program (NSTEP)

For resident of Nebraska who has hearing loss get a free amplified phone, caption phone, or cell phone that help them hear better. They also can receive a light signaler for phones and doorbells.
This equipment is all free and they can also purchase more equipment that is not on our list.

• Equipment Loan Program

We do provide a free loan program for any of our deaf and hard of hearing communities to test out an amplified phone, caption phone, personal amplifier, pocket talker, signaling device, and a TTY for about 3 months. We use this program often with our consumers to see if they would be interested in moving to the next step of filling out the application for NSTEP or an application for caption phones. We do provide an equipment demo at either your home or at the office to help us decide which phone is the best fit for you or your family.

• Media Loan Program

It is a program where anyone can borrow some equipment, DVDs, and books on Deaf and Hard of Hearing, interpreting, hearing loss, and more. You can borrow it for up to 5 weeks at a time. Only 2 DVDs and/or 2 books may be borrowed at one time. You can look through our Media Center through this link: https://www.nebraska.gov/NCDHH/media_checkout/index.cgi

• Free Training/Presentation

We provide presentations on our services and training on how to work with deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. We also provided training on deaf and hard of hearing awareness, how to get an interpreter, and how to incorporate Deaf or hard of hearing needs in work and home environments.
I also would like to add the new addition we have in our programs which are called “Rural Communication Access Fund” and Legal Communication Access Fund”. Those are for Nebraskans who are Deaf, DeafBlind, or Hard of Hearing. In April 2022, Governor Ricketts signed LB1014 into law, it’s a bill that provided federal funding to the state of Nebraska that provides communication support in rural areas and legal services. The funding is only available for two fiscal years. I have included the two flyers with additional information.

Rural Communication Access Fund is a reimbursement program for an on-site, in-person licensed sign language interpreter for any appointment in a rural area outside of Lincoln or the Omaha metro area in the State of Nebraska.

Legal Communication Access Fund is a reimbursement program for qualified licensed sign language interpreters (on-site or remote) or any other auxiliary aid service. Auxiliary aid services can be real-time captioning, CART, or personal amplifiers.

I want to mention again that NCDHH can provide a free presentation on our agency’s programs and services to your community or your staff if you are interested.

Let me know if you have any questions and looking forward to hearing from you.

About blood donation

To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification that are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.

Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by completing a RapidPass®. With RapidPass®, donors complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of donation, from a mobile device or computer. To complete a RapidPass®, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

In most cases, those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine can donate. However, knowing the name of the manufacturer of the vaccine they received is important in determining donation eligibility

Blood drive safety

Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including face masks for donors and staff, regardless of vaccination status – have been implemented to help protect the health of all those in attendance. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive.

About the American Red Cross:

2020 10 07 LOGO CHILD SAVING INSTITUTE

All children need a secure place to learn and grow. The ideal place should be in their own home, however many kids are not that fortunate.

In times of neglect or abuse, a child must sometimes be removed from their home at a moment's noticed and placed in a warm, safe place. Kids of all ages, from birth through high school, sometimes need the help of the Child Saving Institute.

CSI helps foster parents and biological families learn the skills they need for a safe, well-cared-for, and loving family life.During this unsettling time of covid-19, the Murray Christian Church is collecting essential cleaning items for the Child Saving Institute.

If you would like to donate, here are some things they could use:Pine Sol, Lysol Disinfectant Spray, sanitizing wipes, latex and powder-free disposable gloves, (L & XL), and hand sanitizer.

Please bring items to Murray Christian Church, 304 W Young St, Murray, NE on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, between the hours of 10 - 2:00. You may call the church ahead of time, 402-235-2527, to be sure someone will be there to assist you.

Thank you for helping to keep these children, (and the CSI staff), healthy and happy!

 canned food box 1

The Conestoga Backpack Program continues to furnish food to local families in need. The program serves the Murray, Nehawka, Union and Beaver Lake areas in southeast Nebraska, and will not turn anyone away.

Just by adding a few of the items listed below to your shopping list and picking them up, you'll be helping someone in a big way. Keep in mind that some of the children are very young and are possibly 'preparing' their own meals, so easy-to-open containers are a good option for little hands.

Canned soup
Granola bars
Fruit snacks
Dry pasta
Spaghetti sauce
Dry soup mixes
Canned meat (chicken, tuna)
Boxed prepared meal kits (Hamburger Helper, Rice-a-Roni)
Peanut butter
Jelly
Canned fruit and vegetables
Single-serve cereals

Also needed are hygienic supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, cotton swabs, tissues and toilet paper.

To make a monetary donation instead, a check made payable to 'CONESTOGA BACKPACK PROGRAM' may be mailed or deposited at Cornerstone Bank, 102 W Main St, Murray, NE 68409. 100% of all monies collected is used for food and hygienic supplies for the families.

To have the items picked up, call Jill at 402-660-3543 to make arrangements. As another alternative, you may drop them off at Cornerstone Bank in Murray or at their Beaver Lake location.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
