Murray residents have a great service, being able to have most of their recyclables picked up at curbside every Tuesday morning, but sometimes there are items, such as special types of batteries, that are not permissable in our curbside pickup.  There is another option, though.

At Shadow Lake Shopping Center in Papillion, on the outside wall, to the left side of Wheatfield's door, is this large recycle sign (above) with a built-in drop-off bin. This drop-off is for small batteries only, both rechargeable and non-rechargeable. Vehicle batteries are NOT accepted here.

So keep on using your curbside totes for other recyclables, but instead of letting those old, dead batteries rattle around in the junk drawer or on the countertop, just take them along the next time you go shopping at Shadow Lake and drop them in the 'wall'.

WHITE-NOSE SYNDROME in BATS

Bats are creepy little critters and conjure up visions of spooky Halloweens and Count Dracula.  In reality, they're very important and valuable, because, by eating insects, they save U.S. farmers billions of dollars per year, helping immensely with 'organic' pest control.

For the past 10 years or so, these wonderous little creatures have been plagued by white-nose syndrome disease, that has killed about 6 million bats since its discovery along the eastern U.S.  The disease has now reached Nebraska.  If you see any of these diseased bats, please contact Nebraska Game and Parks.

HELP WANTED

Murray Village Full-time Permanent Maintenance Position

The Village of Murray, Nebraska is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Full-time Maintenance operator. This position is for a 40 hour week with overtime as needed. Duties required: operate and maintain all village equipment and tools as necessary, install and read water meters, maintain water shut-offs, meters; assist with water/sewer main breaks, operation and maintenance of one lift station, maintain streets and parks, all other duties as required. Applicant must be willing to complete a general maintenance aptitude test, physical exam, drug test and criminal background check. Applicant will be required to complete Grade IV water operator certification. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Interested applicants should apply in person at Murray Town Hall, 106 West Main Street, Murray, Nebraska 68409. Normal business hours are Tuesday thru Thursday from 8:00 – 4:30.

On the west end of Weeping Water, Nebraska, at 14920 Weeping Water Road, (State Spur 13K, West 'H' St.), is a gem of this little community.

The Dairy Sweet, open 7 days a week, has served-up tasty treats for many, many years from the small, concrete block building, that sits on the west edge of the baseball parks and north of City Pond. Delicious homemade soups are made daily and there's a wide-ranging menu that can be topped-off with a piece of homemade pie, too - if you have room for it! You may also call in your order and pick it up at the outside window at the front of the building.

If you can't wait for all the garage sales to start, in the little 'back room' of the Dairy Sweet is, as they call it, a year-round 'garage sale'. Consignees bring in items to sell and we've actually found some pretty cool things there.

So, stop in for a bite to eat, friendly service, and a look around the garage sale. You never know what you might find!

Lofte Players are State Champions!

Manley, NE (March 20, 2017) - This past summer the Lofte Community Theatre entered Nebraska’s one-act play contest. “Shakespeare’s a D#@k,” is a competition piece by Mark Kenneally about a redneck who wakes up after a heavy night of boozing to find that he can only speak in Shakespearian verse. Directed by Allison Bauers of Louisville, the cast and crew took home several awards including State Champion, Best Supporting Actress (Silvia Conley), Best Supporting Actor (Doug Rothgeb) and Best Set Design (Nick Haussler).

The Lofte production has now qualified to compete in the Region V American Association of Community Theaters Festival being held April 27-30 in Brainerd, MN. There, the Lofte will compete against seven other theaters including the best from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota and South Dakota. Winners of that competition will advance to the National competition being held in June.
